Hello and welcome to the official web page of 40+Canada on the Undernet. I hope that over the next few paragraphs I may be able to answer some of your questions about our channel and maybe highlight a few things that make our channel unique. As the channel 450 it is my job to carry out the policies we set out when we applied for x. Simply put, 40+Canada is a channel where there will be no foul language and where everyone will be treated with respect. Those are the only two rules we live by.

I recognize some of you may not be from the Great White North but as we often say in our topic, that doesn't matter. I like to think that I run an international channel that just happens to be named after a country. We have many operators from the United States and even one or two that come from England. So if you are not Canadian, please don't let that stop you from checking us out.

HOW DID 40+CANADA START?

It can all be traced to the fact that one of our channel 400's, cntrygrl, found herself stranded in Dalnet for a few months. In an effort to find out what was going on, I eventually went to Dalnet and in roaming around there in late 1997 we found a channel called 40+Canada. She and I found it a pleasant channel but we missed our friends on the Undernet. Eventually she found her way back to the Undernet but the germ of an idea was placed in my mind. On January 2, 1998, I was having coffee with a friend of mine whom some of you will know as Tech, and i was complaining about the fact there was no "Canadian" channel on the undernet similar to what I had found on Dalnet. Tech always likes a challenge so he said he would do the paperwork to get x and put a bot in the channel so that we could control things. All went well until January 98 when we in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec were hit by the ice storm. Because we had applied for the channel, cservice was checking to see if there were people on the channel. Even Tech's bot was down because we didn't have electricity. It was because of cntrygrl and Bebop that we have the channel. Both women stayed in that channel and even saw cservice check us out. Finally we were given x on January 16, 1998. Because he was responsible for the paperwork Tech is the channel 500 and he made me the channel 450. Early in 1999 we boosted Cntrygrl and Boogie to the status of 400s, giving them the power to create ops for the channel.

Because of work committments Tech doesn't get into the channel much and my appearances are limited as well, leaving much of the day to day operation of the channel in the hands of my two 400s. Should you have any questions not answered here, feel free to ask them.

WHAT IS NERO AND WHY IS HERE THERE?

As I said off the top, the channel is designed to create an atmosphere for friendship. Nero, being a bot, makes sure that, even if there is no op on channel, or the people who are ops are not available, everything will go well. Nero has a list of 11 words which, if said on channel by anyone but Tech or I, will result in an immediate kick. If that word is said a second time, the person will be kicked and banned for an hour. The third time, the ban is effective for 14 days. That is how serious we are about making sure language standards on the channel are maintained.

Nero also serves another useful purpose. If we are really bored anyone can run a game of trivia. In order to run the game one merely has to type "!trivia" and the bot will run a game. The instructions come up when the game starts. Should you want to end the game, type "pf quit." I find it is useful to run the game should things be too quiet cause we can all make wise about some of the questions asked by Nero. Speaking of wise, don't forget that the channel has the hottub, pool, three couches, two loveseats and the lazyboy chair to make sure that everyone is comfy. Feel free to use these as props should you want to have an imaginary party or whatever while on channel.

I hope that this little background on the history of 40+Canada proves useful and that you enjoy the rest of web page. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Gwen for her work in putting all this together and her committment to spend the time updating this page as required.
